Best Seamonkey Extensions

spacer
The Seamonkey web browser permits you to install special extensions or add-ons in order to modify the user interface and/or endow it with some extra functions. However, if you want to install and run a lot extensions in a Gecko-based browser, you should consider using Mozilla Firefox instead which includes a built-in extension manager. This will allow you to easily access various extension options and, if you so desire, uninstall extensions altogether, the latter of which can be very useful when compatibility issues arise.

Be that as it may, if you're a webmaster or power user (or both) and you're determined to run extensions in Seamonkey then here is what I consider to be some of the...

Best Extensions for Seamonkey

(All the following assumes that you have Seamonkey 1.0 or above installed and you are running Windows 98 or above.)

You can use this extension to add a Home button to the Seamonkey Navigation toolbar. This is especially useful for those who rarely use or just plain don't like the Personal toolbar and would otherwise hide it if the Home button could be moved to the Navigation toolbar (which by default it can't).

INSTALLATION NOTES ~

To install the Home Button extension:
Click on the Install link above and then restart Seamonkey.

To turn the Home button on and off:
Click on View » Show/Hide » Home Button

To hide the Personal toolbar:
Click on View » Show/Hide » Personal toolbar

GLITCHES:
  • Only displays Classic Theme home button - If you've got the Modern theme installed and this extension put the purple cartoony Classic home button on your navigation bar, you can correct this by doing the following:

    • Switch to the Classic theme and then restart Seamonkey. Now switch back to the Modern theme and then restart Seamonkey again. This will render the Modern theme Home button in the Navigation toolbar.

      OR
    • You can avoid this problem altogether by simply installing the Home Button extension to a profile that is using the Classic theme. Then after the installation is complete, switch to the Modern theme.

Preferential

COMPATIBLE WITH:Seamonkey 1.0 and above

Definitely for power users (but if you don't think that includes you, don't be afraid to try it anyway), this extension will allow you to run around backstage and make all kinds of advanced configurations to Seamonkey that are otherwise either not available or buried deep in the Seamonkey menu system.

To use Preferential:
  1. Click on Edit » Advanced Preferences
  2. In the Preference Name column, you'll see a list of all the preference groups. Click on the arrow beside each preference group to expand the group.
  3. Right-click on a preference name and click on Edit Selected.

NOTES:
  • user.js entries relating to each preference can be extracted by right-clicking on a preference and then clicking on user.js Entry. These code snippets can be copy-and-pasted directly into your user.js file. (If you don't know what this is then see the ChromEdit extension.)
  • Some of the preferences are undocumented (see Preferential documentation for more information).

GLITCHES:
  • This extension will function very slowly if you're using it offline since it reportedly attempts to make several network connections when it loads or reloads (see bug #10061).

Another extension for power users, ChromEdit will give you easy access to your profile configuration files into which you can copy-and-paste snippets of code to customize Seamonkey's functionality and user interface. user.js entries (code snippets) can be extracted from the Preferential extension while userChrome.css code snippets can be found here. And here's some more stuff you can add to the user.js file.

  1. Click on Tools » Edit User Files
  2. Edit the file you wish by adding (or removing) applicable code snippets
  3. Click on Save

    3. Click on OK
    4. From here the path to your user.js file is:

Uninstalling Seamonkey Extensions

Unfortunately this is where the party ends for Seamonkey as there is no quick, easy and reliable method of uninstalling extensions. If you have to uninstall an extension however, here are your options:
  1. Set your brain on prepare-to-be-stupefied and then visit the Mozilla knowledge base page on Uninstalling Extensions to learn how to uninstall extensions manually (read: the hard way). If you follow the instructions carefully, this is the most reliable method of uninstalling extensions.
  2. Try installing Jeremy Gillick's Extension Manager which will automate the process of uninstalling extensions. This is a two-part installation.

    1. Install ExtensionUninstaller API and then...
    2. Install ExtensionManager

Be advised however that this extension uninstaller is somewhat dated and will not work on all extensions AND... AND it may royally mess up the Seamonkey user interface if you try to use it on an extension it's not compatible with. (Don't say I didn't warn ya.) But it does work on some extensions.
  3. I've heard tell of another method of uninstalling extensions which involves merely deleting the 'chrome' directory in your user profile while Seamonkey is shut down. You can access the chrome directory by doing the following:

    1. Click on Start » Run.
    2. Type in "%APPDATA%" (without the double quotation marks)
    3. Click on OK
    4. From here the path to your chrome directory is: Mozilla/Profiles/your_current_profile_name/xxxxxxxx.slt/chrome

Deleting the chrome directory will reportedly uninstall all your extensions in one fell swoop providing that you installed your extensions into your profile directory in the first place (typically by clicking on OK instead of Cancel during the installation process). I can't vouch for this method however as every time I tried it, I was left with a big gray bar at the bottom of the Seamonkey user interface. There are a number of power users out there, however, who swear that this method works fine.
  4. A variation of the prior method which I've used with no ill effcts is to simply create a new profile. To do this, click on Tools » Switch Profile... » Manage Profiles.... (This will not uninstall the Home Button extension however.)
